LIONS IN LEDERHOSEN
Bexhill Lions Club held the first OktoberFest at the weekend with some 70 people, many in costume, coming along to have some fun whilst raising money for charity. The evening started with German sausages, sauerkraut, pretzels and apple strudel complimented by a selection of german beers and wine.
This was followed by “Lions in Lederhosen” a laugh a minute cabaret from Lions Club members and Friends of Bexhill Lions. The scene was the market place of the village of Schlappen de Thigh with Klara and her family; Hans, Niece Valma, Uncle and Auntie Boomps and Daisy together with her twin sister Swanilda. “I’m a sausage seller” was sung with gusto, and audience participation. Keeping to the theme, a “pass the sausage” game was demonstrated and the teams from each of the tables competed for a prize.
After a brief interval to top up their steins, the family entered with Ziggy Zaggy and followed this up with a group song Oom Pah Pah, led by Auntie Boomps. A hilarious German language lesson sketch (attributable to Ronnie and Ronnie) was then performed. Swanilda then explained that she busked with an alpine horn as she was not very good at selling sausages. She gave a demonstration on her hand held small horn and then invited members of the audience to a challenge. When assembled, the contestants were faced with a gigantic alpine horn on which to compete. The performance finished with a rendition of “So Long Farewell” to much applause from the Festival goers.
A great night was had by all and compere Lion David Burstow thanked fellow Lion Clare Kersley for organising the whole event as well as producing the cabaret. Thanks also went to other Lions who had prepared the food and the waiters for looking after their tables.
Lion President Paul Fleming said ” It was great to have the whole Club involved and that the Lions really did put the FUN into Fundraising, and made over £500 for good causes. Given the success of the night we plan to hold an even bigger and better one next year, with live FestMusic.”
