LIONS IN YOUR COMMUNITY
We aim to help those in need and support good causes across the Bexhill community. We are all local, so we have a good understanding of where we should focus our efforts.
Throughout the year, local charities and good causes approach us to support a wide range of specific activities or much needed items. We have provided specialist mobility equipment, helped make a garden a safe place to enjoy for a person with disabilities, and fenced in another garden to ensure a guide dog can enjoy its “off duty” time.
Our activities are wide-ranging. We maintain a garden of remembrance for Dragonflies, a bereavement counselling charity, provide marshals to enable the Royal British Legion Remembrance Day parade to take place and support the Sidley Family Day and Christmas Lantern Workshop and Parade. We also help with picking up litter on the beach and other areas of Bexhill and organise an annual family-friendly 2km and 5km Santa Dash to allow people to raise money for their own chosen charities.
Health and well-being are areas of focus for us. We collect and recycle unwanted spectacles and hearing aids, and provide our free ‘Message in a Bottle’. This is a simple and effective way to keep vital medical details, where they can be found in an emergency – in the fridge.
Our SightFest on the DLWP lawns raised awareness of eye care and vision, as well as local charities and support groups that are available to help. We have worked with Active Rother and at their Be Active day, we held a very successful melanoma skin cancer awareness clinic which was attended by over 90 residents.
We support the emergency services in a number of ways, including: purchasing community defibrillators, donating small teddy bears to the ambulance service to help distract and comfort children in unfamiliar surroundings, and giving donations to the Air Ambulance Service.
This year, the Club launched a recycling initiative for unwanted walking sticks and crutches. This was in association with Bexhill Caring Community and the Conquest Hospital.
We have recently helped the following clubs in Bexhill: Sailing Club, Rowing Club, Sea Angling Club, Pit Stop, Surf Life Saving Club and Scouts. Other organisations we have helped include: ESSPA, Glyne Gap School, Homecall, East Sussex Young Carers and Child Disability Service.
Each year, together with other local Lions Clubs, we hold an eagerly awaited “Special Knockout” challenge for those with special needs and various disabilities from across East Sussex. Last year 9 groups represented by 110 contestants in 13 teams took part.
We are able to provide this support from funds raised by donations from the public and our own FUNdraising activities throughout the year. EVERY PENNY goes to a good cause.
Our Club is a member of the Bexhill Coastal Community Team, which aims to improve the prosperity of Bexhill.
